Virginia Madsen to attend Sarasota Film Festival!

Sarasota Film Festival has announced two celebrity guests and its opening and closing films, with their famous directors attending as well. The film festival, which takes place April 13-22 and celebrates 20 years in 2018, made the announcement Friday before its full lineup reveal on Wednesday.

Oscar-nominated actress Virginia Madsen will receive a career achievement award during the closing weekend and have her new film “1985,” about a man’s fears of coming out during the AIDS crisis, screen at the festival. Madsen received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role in 2004′s “Sideways” and has appeared in numerous other high-profile movies, including David Lynch’s science-fiction epic “Dune,” horror cult favorite “Candyman” and Robert Altman’s final film “A Prairie Home Companion.”

The festival will open April 13 at Sarasota Opera House with “Class Rank,” a comedy about two high school students who team up to take over the local school board, directed by Eric Stoltz, who will attend. Stoltz is better known as an actor, including roles in “Pulp Fiction,” “Some Kind of Wonderful” and his Golden Globe-nominated performance in “Mask.”

The closing night film, to be shown April 21 at Sarasota Opera House, will be “Above and Beyond: NASA’s Journey to Tomorrow,” a documentary about NASA’s 60-year history by filmmaker Rory Kennedy.

Cast of Sideways to be featured at a dinner & film in Connecticut!

•• Fall is the time when the big Hollywood studios trot out their Oscar-bait movies, which means many good films are on the way to the multiplexes. But the bounty of good entertainment doesn’t end there.

Small venues throughout the state are planning fun, eclectic lineups of foreign, classic and independent films. Also, there are plenty of film festivals coming this way for all kinds of tastes: Spanish-language films, Irish films, LGBT-themed films, short films. And don’t forget the super-popular Met Live in HD opera series.

“Burn Your Maps” to debut at Toronto International Film Festival

•• A film shot in Calgary last year with breakout star Jacob Tremblay will make its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Burn Your Maps, which also stars Vera Farmiga, Marton Csokas, Virginia Madsen and Suraj Sharma, was shot in downtown Calgary and Kananaskis Country, which subbed in for Mongolia, last summer. Directed by Jordan Roberts and adapted from Robyn Joy Leff’s short story, it tells the story of a boy named Wes who comes to believe he is a Mongolian goat-herder. Tremblay, 9, plays Wes.

Burn Your Maps was announced as part of the TIFF lineup on Tuesday. Festival organizers announced new additions to the gala and special presentation slate, including Bryan Cranston and Jennifer Garner’s Wakefield, about a man who hides from his family in his garage attic after suffering a nervous breakdown. The festival runs Sept. 8 to 18.
